Classes



T.J. Homecrafts Stained Glass offers several classes from beginner to advanced. All our classes are designed to give students hands on experience with a variety of different tools and materials, and no sharing of tools. Whether you are a beginner interested in finding out a bit about stained glass or an experienced glass artist looking to expand your knowledge you will find our classes fun, interesting and informative. In addition to classes at TJ Homecrafts Stained Glass Terry and Patricia teach several stained glass and beadmaking classes at the Vernon Community Arts Centre located right behind the Science Centre in Polson Park, Vernon, BC. Beginner Classes ~ No Experience Required



   

Angels II ~ Christmas Time Only

Cost: $27.00 + GST

This two-hour class is a great way to introduce yourself to the art of stained glass. Using precut glass pieces and a selection of brass filigree accents students will make a lead wrapped, hanging angel that will be a perfect Christmas gift for someone special. No knowledge of glass cutting is required. The cost includes the use of tools and all materials.
   
 

Beginner Stained Glass

Cost: $110.00 + GST

This two-day class gets you started and teaches you all the basics of copper foil construction. During this in depth class, students will be taught techniques that make stained glass fun and easy to learn. Topics covered include glass selection, pattern preparation, advance glass cutting and soldering techniques, and how to reinforce, clean and hang projects. The cost includes the use of good quality tools (no shared tools) and all the materials for your project.
   
 

Introduction to Glass Fusing

Cost: $65.00 + GST

During this three-hour course students will learn the basics of glass fusing using 'System 96' products. Students will have the opportunity to work with a variety of glass frit, stringers and noodles while creating four fused coasters or an 8 inch plate which will be ready for pick up the following week. The properties of glass and how they impact glass when it is heated in the kiln, as well as safety and kiln selection are discussed during the course of the class. Examples of completed projects and failed pieces are used to show not only how to make properly finished projects, but also how to solve problems and prevent failures in the future. Students should have basic cutting skills for this class. The cost includes the use of tools and all materials.
   
 

Introduction to Stained Glass

Cost: $75.00 + GST

This class is designed to introduce students to the art of stained glass using copper foil construction. Students will cut, foil and solder together a simple suncatcher during this one-day class. The cost includes the use of good quality tools (no shared tools) and all the materials for your project.
   
 

Introduction to Leaded Glass

Cost: $160.00 + GST

This class is designed to introduce you to a technique other than the copper foil method and teaches you the basics of working with lead channel. Using a design chosen by the instructor, students will learn to how to construct a stained glass panel using lead came. Basic glass cutting, pattern preparation, reinforcing and finishing will also be covered. The cost includes the use of tools and all materials.
   
 

Stained Glass Stepping Stone

Cost: $60.00 + GST

During this class students will design and make a mosaic stained glass and concrete stepping stone. The techniques taught in this class are standard for making many different types of mosaic items such as coasters, trivets, tabletops as well as stepping stones. No knowledge of glass cutting is required. The cost includes all materials and the use of a mold and tools.
   
 

Suncatchers a la Carte

Cost: $20.00 + Materials Fee + GST

During this three-hour class learn a little bit about stained glass while making fun and easy lead wrapped projects using precut glass pieces, glass nuggets, brass filigree and lead hobby came. Choose what you would like to make from a list of projects and pay the materials fee for only those projects you choose to make. No knowledge of glass cutting is required. The cost includes the use of tools.

Intermediate Classes



Angels I - Christmas Time Only

Cost: $55.00 + GST

During this 1 day class students will make one hanging angel and one standing angel using your choice of glass and a selection of brass filigree and twisted wire accents. Students should have basic cutting skills for this class. The cost includes the use of tools and all materials.
 

Fusing Workshop

Cost: $85.00 + GST

For students who have taken our Introduction to Glass Fusing class and want to make another project in the design of their choice. The cost is based on an 8" plate or bowl and includes the use of tools, materials and two firings. Additional costs may apply to premium glass or larger projects.
   
 

Improve Your Soldering

Cost: $30.00 + GST

If you spend hours working on a project just to be disappointed by your soldering, this class is for you. During this class students will learn professional soldering techniques as well as the do's and don'ts that can affect the look of your finished project. Arrange to bring in a project that is ready to solder (approx. 15 to 20 pieces), solder and your soldering iron and get ready to say good-bye to bumps, flat spots and wavy lines.
   
 

Intermediate Leading

Cost: $125.00 + GST

This 12-hour class is for students who have taken our Introduction to Leaded Glass class and want to make a more advanced project. Students should pick a project no larger than 15” x 20” and depending on the complexity of the piece you may have to finish at home or for a fee, work on it outside class time until it's completed. There will be a review of cutting methods and pattern preparation as well as reinforcing and finishing. The cost includes the use of tools. All supplies must be, or have been purchased at T.J. Homecrafts Stained Glass.
   
 

Stained Glass Mirror

Cost: $100.00 + GST

Using a design chosen by the instructor, students will make an attractive mirror frame in their choice of colours, then foil and attach a pre-cut overlay design to the finished frame. Topics covered include glass selection, assembly, black edge, hanging and how to choose and attach the right overlay for any shape and style of mirror. Students must have basic cutting skills for this course. The cost includes the use of tools and all materials.

Advanced Classes



   

Bigger & Better

Cost: $180.00 + GST

If you are intimidated by larger patterns, intricate cutting, or you are having trouble fitting your pieces and achieving the finished look you want then you need to take this class. During this four day class students will hone their skills, focusing on things they have had trouble with in the past, while building a panel of their choosing. There will be a review of pattern preparation, glass cutting, fitting, soldering as well as reinforcing and finishing. The cost includes the use of tools. All supplies must be, or have been purchased at T.J. Homecrafts Stained Glass.
   
 

Stained Glass Box

Cost: $75.00 + GST

In this 6 hour class learn techniques to make constructing a stained glass box easier than you ever thought possible. If you have ever struggled with keeping a project square or applying hinges that stay on, then this class is for you. You must have basic cutting skills for this course. The cost includes the use of tools and all materials.
   
 

Stained Glass Lamp

Cost: $130.00 + GST

This two-day class will show you the techniques that take the mystery out of lamp construction. Using a design chosen by the instructor, students will make an attractive lamp in their choice of colours. Learn about glass selection, vase caps, spiders and reinforcing. A variety of lamp assembly tools will be available for students to use during the class. Students should have basic cutting and soldering skills for this class. The cost includes the use of tools and all materials.

Beginner Stained Glass

 
This class gets you started and teaches you the basics of copper foil construction. During this in depth class, students will be taught techniques that make stained glass fun and easy to learn. Glass For Your Garden

 
Using stained glass, wire, glass nuggets, rocks and other objects students will make a colourful and intriguing piece of abstract garden art.  No previous glass experience is required. To register for this class contact the Vernon Community Arts Centre at www.vernonarts.ca.
 
 

Exploring Stained Glass

 
Whether you are a beginner or have some experience in stained glass, this class has something for everyone. Students have the option of making as many or as few projects as they like during the course of the class, or you can also work on an existing project that still needs to be completed. Topics covered include glass cutting, fitting your pieces, soldering, working with filigree and reinforcing. Suggested projects for those who want to cut their own glass include small panel, suncatchers, mirror and angels. A selection of pre-cut glass suncatcher, angel, dragonfly, butterfly, holly and night light designs are available for those who do not want to cut their own glass but still want to make several projects. Glass Beadmaking 101

 
This beginner’s level workshop introduces the art and science of glass beadmaking. Using a bead maker’s torch & rods of Italian glass, students will learn basic bead shapes, decorating techniques, use of hand tools, glass theory and safety. Students will go home with many glass beads they have made. Materials Fee includes all use of tools and materials. Please wear closed toed shoes and cotton clothing. Due to a limited number of spaces in our classes, payment is required at the time of registration. If you are unable to attend a class after full payment is made, you may rebook the lesson or your payment will be refunded less a $20.00 cancellation fee. Participants in any class that is cancelled by T.J. Homecrafts Stained Glass will receive a full refund.
